They always catch my attention when I sit next to the window.
Somewhere on the way from Mexico City to Chihuahua. 2012.
If you live in Chihuahua, Mexico, you know that the Doblado street is best-known for hookers, rather than for Thai Food. I’m not going to talk about the hooker-part of the street which is actually quite sad, I’m going to talk about the other side of the street where there is a small place that offers authentic Thai food next to a bar.
The place is really small, as you enter you’re welcomed by a big flame coming out of the wok, a great smell and a honest smile. I don’t know how the owner’s name is spelled, it sounds like ”one”, I called him ”Juan”. As a Mexican, it was my duty to find a latin name that sounded like his and Juan fitted perfectly. I went there with my friend Armando, he’s a chef so he was very keen on trying the food, also some other friends were waiting for us, having a beer inside the bar next door (you ought to know that if you are more than two people, you have to go and eat the food at the bar’s tables). The place where Juan cooks is really small but the end result is anything but small. So, we came in and asked if we could take pictures (assuming he spoke Spanish), he didn’t understand. After two minutes of trying to communicate in Spanish, Eugenio, my other friend, came in from the bar and said something to him in English. We discovered then that he spoke English and we all laughed.
He told us that he wants to remodel the place, ”it would have been better if you had come when the place was finished” he said. ”We came for the food, not for the place, don’t worry” we said. ”Haha I see” he said and looked down. ”I hope you don’t get dissappointed” he added. Everyone that prepares food gives you that humble comment whenever you tell them you’re excited to try their food. ”We won’t be” I said. ”Enrique told us to come, you remember Enrique? He’s the one that speaks a lot of Languages” I added afterwards. ”Oh yes yes, he was going to bring me some more ingredients he said. He’s nice”. I then asked what was he doing, ”So, what are you preparing Juan?”. ”Fish. The exotic way! and then Chicken ”Panang” (or something that sounded like that)” he replied. ”Let’s see how you do that then”. After that he started to prepare the food and we stood there looking at him working. He moved his hands very fast and was very good with the knife. He showed us the big burn he had on his arm which was caused by the wok. He also let us taste some of the ingredients that we there on the table. ”You cook with the wok?” He asked armando. I don’t remember Armando’s answer, I think it was ”Yes”.
About the photos:
1. This is the place if you look at it from the street, next to it is the bar.
2. As you enter you see ”Juan” preparing things.
3. He prepares rice, of course. A very tasty one, of course.
4. As we were talking someone called him and he didn’t understand so he handed the phone to my friend.
5. My friend gets the phone and finds out it was a recorded message from a political campaign or something like that.
6. He starts to cut things to put on top of the fish
7. He adds soy sauce to the fish
8. He puts oil in the wok along with some spices and things, then he puts the chopped vegetables on top of the fish and pours the flavored oil on top to fry them.
9. That’s the chicken ”Panang”
10. That’s Juan
Juan is really nice, he encouraged us to go back when the place was remodeled. He was very excited about remodling it. We weren’t disappointed by the food, honestly it was really good. What’s interesting to me is the fact that there’s a Thai food place next to a cantina in Chihuahua, Mexico. This city is not a metropoli, so it’s not common to see things like that, we certainly don’t have a big international community, that’s why I find this little establishment interesting. We were happy by the end of the meal and decided to have a cigarrete and then head off to another friend’s house. I was glad we made the decision of going to eat there.

Meet Sebastian Liste, winner of this year’s Ian Parry scholarship… ”What makes a good photo?” For me, the word merit should always be included in the answer to this question. The merit of being there in that precise moment and to freeze it forever, nothing more exciting than that. You, my friend, were there. You and your loyal friend, your camera, were able to give the world the opportunity to watch that instant forever, no one else. Nothing better in the world to feel.
To make this project, he developed relationships with families living in Galpao de Araujo Barreto, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. He was able to take extremely personal and really insider-only photos of them and their living conditions, even to the point of being able to capture them having sexual relationships, as you can see in one of the pictures. I always say there is a fine line between an excelent photo with tons of merit and one that’s just morbid. Morbid photos have merit, they do, but they could be just pretencious and attention-seeking; sometimes that’s not very nice to do. The photo of them having sex is not morbid, it’s what was happening at that instant and he captured it, the photo went to him, not him for the photo. For him to be a stranger and being able to open the doors of this community and hang around with them has merit. Talk about leaving your comfort zone…
Here’s what Liste has to say about the photo:
”Probably the most unexpected situation that I experienced in Barreto was the story behind the photograph of the couple making love. I spent that entire morning talking with them in a small shack. At first, there were many people coming and going—some stopped by to buy crack, then returned to smoke, and then they would leave the shack. After a while, I was alone in the room with this couple and they moved the couch in front of the door. They did this so they could smoke crack without anyone entering. While we were talking, they sat on the couch while I sat on a bed in front of them. Once their high set in, they began to be very affectionate—kissing, fondling. One thing led to another and the two of them began to make love, not caring in the least that I was in the room. At this point, I could not leave the room because the couch was blocking the door. I grabbed my camera and as I watched this strange situation unfold I took a photo. Before this moment, I had never been interested in taking pictures of people having sex.”

Ever heard ”My Way” written by Paul Anka and made famous by Frank Sinatra? Ever wondered if the original rhythm is from a song that’s actually in French and sung by Claude François?
Well, now you know…
This person’s name is Jonás Uranga Corral. He wrote a book. I’m going to tell you a little story related to him, if you don’t have time to read it all just read this if you want:
We were at my house and I asked him if I could take some pictures of him with some strange clothes I had at my house. He agreed and we went. This is the end result.
If you’re interested, then you can read the following text, I talks a little bit about the book and how it came to my hands. It doesn’t talk about the photos, the photos are there, just watch them, in fact if you want you can just watch the pictures and don’t read anything at all, although by the time you read this you probably already read what is written before. Or maybe not, maybe you just started reading here, could be, you never know… Highly improbable, but you never know. Sorry if i’m being a little bit annoying, maybe you just wanted to look at the pictures real quick and now you are reading the bullshit I wrote, I’m sorry if that is happening right now, I suggest you give a second look to the pictures and carry on with your life, if such is the case. If that’s not the case, stay around, we’re glad to have you here, my friend.
He lent me the book a few months ago and I haven’t finished reading it. Maybe he doesn’t even remember I have it, or maybe he does. Maybe each morning he wonders which page am I reading, maybe he wonders if I like it and wants to know what I think about it. Maybe he is a bit scared that I’m not going to like it or maybe he doesn’t even care, maybe not even him likes it and considers it to be bullshit turned into letters and punctuation marks. Highly improbable, but you never know. In fact, I think he likes it, if not he wouldn’t have written it. He actually wrote it as someone else, he used the name Thomas Lambourne. I actually think it’s a pretty cool name, maybe because I’m mexican, maybe french people think it’s just another name. If you’re interested, I can tell you in which part of the book I stopped reading last time I opened it, I’m guessing you are, and I’m telling you I was reading the part where she is preparing to go to Sybaris. I’ll finish the book and if you’re interested I can tell you how it ends and what happens with the couple and all the other characters. It’s an interesting book, you definitely don’t think the guy I play football with every friday at 6 pm wrote it, it’s genuinely good. The book is called 3000 d.c. (three thousand years after Christ was born). If you’re interested I can ask him to lend it to you, but you’ll have to wait until I discover what happens when she goes to Sybaris and all that, but we can work it out.
Interesting man this one here, good for football as well, good painting abilities, awful drinking habits.
